Dating after divorce: When does a first date lead to a second?

Nothing is more nerve-wracking about dating after divorce than the dreaded first date. What will you wear? Will you and your date hit it off? How in the world do you pronounce some of these menu items? (We’re looking at you, quinoa.)

But do we put too much pressure on first dates? On Thursday, AARP dating expert Ken Solin told HuffPost Live host Caitlyn Becker that people should lower their expectations and use first dates to gauge whether a second date is worthwhile.

“The first date I always suggest should be a coffee date,” he said. “It’s a brief interview. Like a job interview, you smile and get as much out of it as you can and hopefully, by the time you leave that date, you know if a second date is warranted. If you feel like you’re sorry that it’s over, that’s the best thing that can happen. If the date doesn’t work well, you can always say, ‘Gee, thanks and get up and leave.’ It’s an interview and people need to understand that.”
